Guillaume Larrue
Egyptian Room at the Louvre
Painted in around 1885, this is a view of the Salle de la Colonnade, which in 1847 had become home to the museum’s large Egyptian monuments. Larrue contrasts the Great Sphinx of Tanis, a masterpiece from antiquity defying the centuries, with elegant visitors to the museum dressed in accordance with the ephemeral fashions of the day.
